Wilderness & Wonder: A Lenten Guide to Dismantling and Reimagining

A Lenten devotional for those whose faith is changing—and for the churches who to walk with them.

Wilderness & Wonder is a 40-day Lenten companion for people who are tired of religious certainty, but are still drawn to the wisdom, honesty, and beauty of the tradition. It is also a practical resource for churches and ministers navigating transition, complexity, and fatigue.

For Individual Readers

If it feels like the structures of your religion are cracking, you are not alone. For many of us, Lent no longer fits the way it once did. The old rituals feel thin. The pressure to perform spirituality feels like it no longer fits. And yet, the longing for meaning, justice, and sacred space remains.

Wilderness & Wonder is written for:

  • people navigating dismantling religion without wanting to burn everything down
  • those weary of performative religion and dogmatic rules
  • anyone longing for a Lent that makes room for doubt, grief, imagination, and hope

Over six weeks and Holy Week, the devotional follows a rhythm:

  • Foundation — returning to ancient texts with open eyes
  • Wilderness — dismantling beliefs and systems that no longer serve life
  • Re-Imagining — envisioning a faith shaped by love, creativity, and wonder

Underneath it all, this is a book about letting go.

  • a pastoral companion for communities navigating change

The structure follows the traditional Lenten calendar while offering language that resonates with:

  • mixed-belief congregations
  • people impacted by religious trauma
  • communities committed to justice, honesty, and compassion

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the book ship?

Print books will be produced after the pre-order window closes. Orders placed by January 15 will be printed in mid-January and shipped shortly after, with the goal of arriving before Ash Wednesday (Feb 18). Canadian orders will be printed in Montreal and shipped from Ontario. Orders outside Canada will be fulfilled via print-on-demand and may arrive slightly earlier or later, depending on location. My main goal is to get the book to you before Ash Wednesday.

Can I pay online or only by e-transfer?

Both options are available. Canadian readers may choose e-transfer, and online payment will also be available via a secure payment link or invoice. After you submit your pre-order, you’ll receive a follow-up email with clear payment instructions based on your preference. If you have questions or need a different arrangement, that’s always welcome too.

Is the e-book included?

The e-book and print edition are offered separately. The ebook is available on a Pay-What-You-Can basis and will be released shortly before Ash Wednesday via PayHip. If you’d like early access to the ebook when it becomes available, please sign up for my mailing list on this page. Many readers choose one format; some choose both.

Is there an audio-book option?

Yes! I am recording the audio-book right now. This is new technology for me, so I am still a bit unclear on how distribution will work. I know you’ll be able to purchase the audio files on PayHip. I am also exploring how to make it available inside of common audiobook apps. The best way to learn more is by signing up for my mailing list on this page.
