I’m Greg Simpson—a minister, writer, speaker, and creator exploring what we can learn about ourselves, one another, and our place within creation.
My work is rooted in curiosity: about the ancient worlds behind our sacred texts, the beliefs we inherit, the communities we build, and what faith can become when old certainties begin to loosen.
A question for this season
What does life look like when inherited faith no longer fits?
Many people are questioning inherited beliefs or reconsidering their relationship with church. Some are grieving a community, finding belonging elsewhere, or exploring spirituality on their own terms. Others no longer identify with religion at all. Even people who have never belonged to a church can find their lives shaped by Christian ideas absorbed through family, school, politics, or wider culture.
I am currently arranging interviews to inform Faith in the Dismantling, which I will be developing during my January–March 2027 sabbatical. I would like to hear from people with different relationships to religion—including those who have left, stayed, are unsure, or were never part of a church.
What expectations did you inherit? When did you begin to question them? What has changed in your relationships, routines, or sense of belonging? What have you kept, and what have you left behind? You do not need to describe your experience as spiritual, or have reached a settled conclusion, to take part.
These conversations are an opportunity to listen, not an invitation back to church. Before an interview, we will discuss how material may be used and your preferences about privacy. You may skip questions or end the conversation at any time. I will ask for explicit permission before quoting or identifying anyone; the book’s fictional characters will be original creations, not disguised portraits of interview participants.
Ministry, curiosity, and creative work
I serve as minister at St. Andrew’s United Church in Chatham, Ontario. I preach, teach, provide pastoral care, speak in public settings, create digital content, and help communities engage difficult questions with honesty and compassion.
Before entering ministry, I spent about fourteen years in software development. Theatre, music, storytelling, technology, and the practical work of making things continue to shape how I communicate and create.
I am interested in faith that helps us tell the truth, share bread, protect vulnerable people, and build communities where people can belong.

Wilderness & Wonder is a daily Lenten companion for people whose faith is changing, as well as churches and ministers learning to walk with them.
Across Lent and Holy Week, it explores wilderness as a place of disruption, truth, grief, possibility, and transformation. Its daily rhythm moves through scripture, foundation, wilderness, and reimagining—making room to release beliefs that no longer serve life and envision a faith shaped by love, justice, creativity, and wonder.

Faith lived in community
Since 2018, I have served as minister at St. Andrew’s United Church in Chatham, Ontario.
St. Andrew’s is a vibrant, inclusive congregation seeking to live with compassion, courage, and curiosity. My work there includes worship, preaching, teaching, pastoral care, community partnerships, and helping the congregation respond faithfully to a changing church and world.
The life of a congregation involves celebration, conflict, grief, laughter, service, uncertainty, and the steady work of showing up for one another. That lived experience grounds my writing and public work.
The book taking shape
Faith in the Dismantling
A companion for people whose questions have outgrown the answers they were given
Faith in the Dismantling is a gentle nonfiction guidebook for people questioning inherited religion and the cultural expectations that surround it. It brings pastoral reflection and careful research into conversation with the unfolding lives of original fictional characters—people whose choices, relationships, and contradictions make the questions human.
The book explores how beliefs, habits, and authority shape the lives we think we are choosing: what questioning costs, how belonging changes, and what it means to live honestly without having every answer. It makes room for people leaving religion, remaining within it, or recognizing its influence despite never belonging to a church.
There is no required destination here. Returning to church, rebuilding faith, adopting a new spirituality, or forgiving those who caused harm is not the measure of a life well lived. Dismantling does not have to lead to reconstruction.
I will focus on developing the book during my January–March 2027 sabbatical. I am currently arranging interviews with people whose experiences can broaden and challenge my understanding of religion, cultural expectations, questioning, and belonging. Stories taking shape
Alongside my theological and devotional writing, several fictional worlds are slowly taking shape. Some are already deeply outlined; others are being allowed to rest until their time comes. They differ in genre and setting, but each returns to questions that continue to fascinate me: Who gets to belong? What makes a family? What do we owe one another? And can damaged people and communities still find their way toward grace?
